A CURATED Small-Group TOUR TO SICILY

As we traverse the largest Mediterranean island coast to coast, pampered in luxurious accommodations, and inspired by the insight of engaging local guides each moment in our Western Sicily & Siracusa Tour reveals a new wonder to behold.

A journey like no other awaits, from the ancient gestures of pistacchio growers on the volcanic soil of Mt. Etna to the hands of a local grandma making couscous and filling cannoli. Step into a world of ancient traditions that mingle legacies of Greek, Roman, Arab, French, and Spanish conquerors telling tales of a bygone era.

With an intimate small group of 6 – 12 guests, the 9-day Western Sicily & Siracusa Tour starts in Palermo*** where, skipping the crowds, we delve into layers of past civilizations, including a walk through the rowdy food market and a close look at the impressive golden mosaics of Monreale‘s Cathedral, a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Next, our Sicily tour goes to the salt pans of the west dotted by windmills and ruins of the ancient Phoenician colony of Motya. From Trapani we sail to Favignana island and take in the Mediterranean flair in a day trip focused on food traditions that draw on history, such as the past hardships of tuna fishing, and we witness the making of couscous with a grandma.

Our small-group Sicily tour continues to Agrigento’s sun-burned countryside where we secure luxurious rooms at a 5-star resort. We visit the famous Greek Temples, the off-the-beaten-path town of Naro, and the surrounding wine region with sumptuous dining.

Near Castelvetrano we learn how centuries-old olive trees take nutrients in the rocks carved by ancient Greeks, giving a superb olive oil listed by Slow Food.

The last two nights of the tour settle in luxurious accommodations in the timeless charm of Ortigia, the old town of Siracusa, one of Sicily’s most charming seaside old towns. From here we explore the well-preserved Greek Theatre and the town of Noto.

Whether it is the warmth of Sicilian people opening the doors of their homes to us or admiring the coastline from your room’s balcony, our curated Western Sicily & Siracusa Tour delivers that strong and elemental character that the region retains.

***In 2025 the tour is 10 days and it’s the reverse, starting in Taormina (no Siracusa) and ending in Palermo.

Meet Piemonte Sicily Map

Can’t say enough about Meet Piemonte and the Sicily tour. We traveled before with them to Piedmont and they accommodated our request to arrange a private departure for my family of eight. Their Sicilian itinerary was just perfect, not too rushed, but at the same time, we were able to do coast to coast which is something that we couldn’t find with other operators. We particularly loved our day on the island of Favignana, the tour of the old tuna fishing, and the views. Kudos to each local guide we met and to our tour manager Lorenzo who took care of all the details. We couldn’t imagine doing this by ourselves. Highly recommended!

Day-By-Day Itinerary

Day 1 – Welcome to our Western Sicily & Siracusa Tour

Meals included: dinner
Accommodation: Palermo

Arrive on your own at Palermo’s airport and transfer to the hotel located in the heart of the city center.

Flat-rate taxi rides are available from the airport (white cars only) and private drivers can be arranged for an extra charge.

Check in and relax in a luxurious boutique hotel, a perfect oasis of peace to escape Palermo’s bustling streets.

Tonight, meet your fellow travelers and your tour manager for a brief orientation talk followed by our first group dinner in a renowned osteria of Palermo to toast to our Western Sicily & Siracusa Tour.

Day 2 – Palermo’s Vivid Colors and Monreale’s Golden Mosaics

Meals included: breakfast and food tasting
Accommodation: Palermo

After an excellent breakfast, our Western Sicily & Siracusa Tour focuses on Palermo’s intricate history and art legacy, a unique outcome of centuries of conquerors and influences layered on the island.

We discover on foot the Martorana Church and the vibrant and rowdy Capo food market. As we reach the bustling Quattro Canti intersection, Palermo surprises with the mix of Arab, Norman, and Byzantine architecture, next to the imposing Neo-Classical Opera House.

Our expert local guide alternates back alleys and hidden gems in an engaging walking tour with some stops to taste Palermo’s traditional street food.

In the afternoon, a 30-minute drive takes us to the northern outskirts of Palermo, up to the town of Monreale where in 1172, Norman King William II started the construction of a stunning cathedral.

Our local guide will help read the golden mosaics covering the cathedral’s interior, among the most extended and precious of the Mediterranean.

Back in Palermo, enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. Dinner on your own.

Day 3 – Alcamo Wine Region, The Salt Pans, And Erice

Meals included: breakfast, lunch and dinner
Accommodation: Trapani ‘s countryside

After checking out, we drive west to Alcamo’s wine region where a restored fortified farmhouse opens the doors to their cellar and production facility.

We partake in a tasting of Indigenous grape varietals like the Catarratto used for the Alcamo DOC wine. Pairing wines with homemade food, our lunch is a convivial and educational journey with the flavors of Western Sicily.

The Salt Pans Of Trapani And Marsala

The Western Sicily & Taormina Tour continues to the shores of the Stagnone’s lagoon where our local guide shares stories and fun facts about the ancient tradition of producing salt in this stretch of coast exposed to hot sun and strong winds. As we sail on a private boat, take in the view of the shallow salt pans and their restored windmills as we reach the preserved small island of San Pantaleo.

We step into the archeological excavation of Motya, once a powerful city built by the Phoenicians, one of the earliest civilizations of the Mediterranean.

In the late afternoon check in at a boutique resort with gorgeous views over the coastline of Western Sicily with the Aegadian islands, the bay of San Vito Lo Capo, and Mt. Erice in the background.

Relax at the pool or take a walk in the garden of this quiet retreat in the province of Trapani.

Tonight a 15-minute drive will take us to Erice, a charming medieval village perched on top of a mountain. Enjoy a traditional dinner in a cozy, handpicked restaurant.

Day 4 – The Essence of the Mediterranean: a Day Trip to Favignana Island

Meals included: breakfast and lunch
Accommodation: Trapani ‘s countryside

A short drive takes us to the port of Trapani from where a high-speed ferry transfers us in just 30 minutes to the island of Favignana.

Favignana, the largest of the Aegadian islands, embraces visitors with its chilled vibe and vivid colors, a gem of our Western Sicily & Siracusa Tour.

Our local expert welcomes us at the dock and escorts us for a coffee break in the bustling main piazza. Then we reach on foot the former Florio’s tuna fishing facility, now a museum, that for over a century represented the most important economic resource of Favignana.

The tools and the industrial architecture of the tonnara – tuna fishing facility – support the fascinating narration of old traditions, myths, and clever fishing techniques that, despite seeming cruel to our modern eye, preserved the tuna species in the sea.

Next, board local taxis and transfer to a higher part of the island to take in views, plunge our feet in the Mediterranean, and explore the natural beauty of this piece of land closer to Africa than to mainland Italy!

Meet a chef for a dive into the ancient art of making couscous and partake in a tasting of delicious, freshly prepared food.

This afternoon we board the high-speed boat back to Trapani where you can follow your tour manager in the elegant shopping streets of the city center.

Grab an early dinner (on your own) before returning to our hotel.

*In case of rough sea conditions, for everyone’s safety and well-being, the ride to Favignana may be arranged with a bigger ferry boat. In case of bad weather, the Favignana excursion will be replaced by another land-based activity. No refunds will be given in either case.

Day 5 – Olive Oil Tasting, And Chill at Luxurious Agrigento Resort

Meals included: breakfast, lunch and dinner
Accommodation: Agrigento

After checking out, this morning we travel to the countryside of Castelvetrano, one of the best corners of Sicily for olives cultivation.

Rooted in the mineral-rich soil of a former quarry of Greek times, the farm’s century-old olive trees, produce delicious oil that stands apart for its superb characteristics.

Walk through the massive olive trees and join a technical and informative tasting of the three types of olives grown here, listed by Slow Food as a product to be protected. Gain a new appreciation for extra-virgin olive oil and sit at the table for lunch in the rustic farm’s restaurant sampling fresh vegetables, the sour-dough bread of Castelvetrano, and traditional recipes.

Crossing plains and rolling hills covered with orange crops, we arrive in the sun-burned countryside of Agrigento. Our home for the next two nights is a modern 5-star resort with views of the Valley of Temples and the Mediterranean Sea in the background.

We make sure to arrive here after lunch so that guests can enjoy an afternoon of relaxation by the private pool on their patio or by the larger, central pool by the bar.

For dinner, the resident chef will surprise us with local ingredients and traditional recipes re-interpreted with a modern twist and a fine dining service.

Agrigento winery tour

Day 6 – The Valley of Temples, Naro & Lunch with Wine Tasting

Meals included: breakfast, pastry tasting
Accommodation: Agrigento

Wake up surrounded by the fragrance of aromatic herbs, flowers, and Mediterranean lush vegetation, and enjoy breakfast in the sunny and quiet countryside of Agrigento in one of the very few hotels in the area where you will not hear any traffic.

A 5-minute bus transfer will take us to the entrance of one of the most impressive Unesco World Heritage sites of Italy, the Valley of Temples featuring the best preserved Greek temples in the world, dating back to the VI century B.C.

Our informative and friendly local expert walks us on a journey back in time and the guided tour will last approximately a couple of hours.

Then, we are off to the countryside of Agrigento, home of a local DOC wine appellation. We meet the President of such a consortium in his private home, a restored Baglio – a farmhouse located on a hillcrest overlooking the vineyards.

We enjoy lunch on the outdoor terrace (in case of bad weather, we will eat in the indoor dining room), paired with a tasting of Sicily’s indigenous grape varietals Grillo and Nero d’Avola, as well as international grapes Syrah and Chardonnay.

Offbeat Western Sicily & Siracusa Tour: Naro

This afternoon our Western Sicily & Siracusa Tour takes us to a hidden gem, the Baroque and medieval town of Naro. Much less popular than Noto, Naro deserves a stop to admire the elegant architecture of churches and aristocratic palaces. We take a leisure walk and get a glimpse of this typical Sicilian town, where not many tourists come, and where local people still live genuinely.

Tonight’s dinner is on your own and we offer the choice between driving to the nearby beach town of San Leone, where to try one of the casual pizzerias and seafood restaurants. Alternatively, stay for a romantic à la carte dinner at the refined hotel’s restaurant.

Day 7 – Pistacchio Farm on Mt. Etna

Meals included: breakfast and lunch
Accommodation: Siracusa

Check out from Agrigento and drive to the island’s easter coast.

As the Western Sicily & Siracusa Tour crosses the dramatic scenery of Sicily’s mainland, stories, fun facts, and photo opportunities will be on hand as we spot hilltop towns, wheat fields, and remote valleys, including the city of Enna perched on a cliff and the region of the former sulfur mines.

Our destination is the lower flanks of Mt. Etna, near the town of Bronte. Here, a unique micro-climate that benefits from the proximity to the sea, combined with the fertile volcanic soil, generates the perfect environment for the cultivation of pistacchio.

We meet Andrea, the owner of a historic farm where the art of grafting the crooked pistacchio trees and harvesting the precious nuts on the rocky grounds, is passed from generation to generation.

Surrounded by a barren and fascinating landscape, we sit in the farm’s courtyard and partake in a light lunch savoring a delicious selection of savory and sweet specialties made with the best pistacchio in the world, known for its refined taste.

The Timeless Charm Of Ortigia, The Old Siracusa

After lunch, we continue to the southeast tip of Sicily, where the city of Siracusa lies.

A private porterage service will transport our luggage from the mainland to the island of Ortigia, connected to the rest of the city by bridges.

Check-in to luxurious accommodations, steps away from the cozy restaurants of the fish market area and from the Cathedral Square, one of the most elegant piazzas of Italy, that framed movies, fashion shows, and many other events.

Our tour manager is available for an orientation walk, all the way to the Arethusa Spring and for dinner suggestions.

Day 8 – Siracusa’s Greek Theatre and Noto

Meals included: breakfast and dinner
Accommodation: Siracusa

This morning, we skip the heat and the crowds by visiting Siracusa’s Greek Theatre soon after opening hours. Our knowledgeable local guide takes us on a journey back in time when plays by famous playwrights like Aeschylus and Sophocles had been performed here since the construction in the fifth century BC.

We step inside the Ear of Dionysius, a man-made limestone cave shaped like a tall, narrow ear, as the result of ancient quarrying, where acoustics are sensational.

Next, we relax onboard our vans and in only 45 minutes we arrive at Noto, considered the capital of Sicilian Baroque architecture.

We enjoy free time to explore at our own pace the main street, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, flanked by artisanal and fashion shops, and historic cafés.

For lunch, we suggest stuffed focaccia, fresh salads and to end with the best almond granite or freshly-stuffed cannoli.

Take a photo of Noto’s Cathedral, with its grand staircase and intricate façade before returning to Siracusa for the rest of the afternoon of relaxation.

Tonight, it’s time to celebrate the end of our Sicilian adventure with another unforgettable meal in a well-established Osteria in Ortigia.

Mobility & Things To Know

  • To enjoy the Western Sicily & Siracusa Tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances. This is not a physically demanding tour, however, there will be a lot of walking, often on uneven steps, cobblestones, uphill and downhill.  One of the charming aspects of Italy is its historical and architectural conformation. Many towns and attractions can only be visited on foot, as vans and buses cannot access the pedestrian areas where most places of interest are located.
  • Unfortunately we cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Our tour managers and tour guides are unable to provide ongoing individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other physical needs.
  • While the driving time on our tours is limited, getting to remote farmhouses and villages may require driving on windy roads that may cause motion sickness.
  • Due to the historic nature of many of the luxury boutique hotels where we stay, some rooms may include stairs and differ in size and layout.

Before departure, guests will receive via email a complete list of things to know about Italy, such as what to pack, money, electricity, health, tipping, VAT refund, and more.

Why a Sicily Tour with Meet Piemonte?

The Sicily Tour organized by Meet Piemonte Tour Operator provides the insight of local guides and travel professionals who contributed to assemble an exclusive itinerary you through centuries of history, from mountains and plains to the coastline of the largest island of the Mediterranean. Our Sicily Tour combines the offbeat with iconic treasures such as Monreale’s Cathedral, the Valley of Temples, The Greek Theatre of Siracusa, and more. The combination of our personal knowledge and the incredible support of some of the best local experts native to Sicily is key to this comprehensive itinerary that includes exclusive and intimate access to venues hard to find like family-owned boutique wineries, celebrated olive oil producers, home cooking, and more. We decided to expand our program to Western Sicily, often dismissed by other competitors and, at the same time, we built a relaxed itinerary despite Sicily’s long drives. In the paragraphs below we explain how this Western Sicily & Siracusa Tour focuses on parts of the island that might be less popular but yet authentic and important to delve into the culture.

A Comprehensive Sicily Tour

Our Western Sicily & Siracusa Tour has been specifically designed to satisfy the traveler who has been to Sicily before and the first-time visitor. We pride ourselves on focusing on the western coast, Agrigento and its surroundings, and end in Siracusa. Unlike most competitors that rush to Agrigento for a quick look at the Valley of Temples and leave straight after with exhausting long bus rides, our Sicily tour package includes the sun-kissed countryside of Agrigento for two nights in an exclusive luxury resort. Our small group tour to Sicily enjoys fine dining with the night view of Greek Temples in the distance and explores the surroundings known for winemaking and unspoiled cultural encounters.

Even Siracusa is often considered just for a day trip by most Sicily tours out there, but we decided to stay there for the final two nights of the tour. The old section of Siracusa is an island, Ortigia, connected to the mainland by bridges. It is one of Sicily’s most charming seaside towns and even more so in the evening, when cruise ships and day trippers leave. Nothing like taking a walk in the morning around Ortigia or at night, admiring the impressive central square and the Cathedral lit up.

Back to the first part of the tour, Western Sicily is a gem, often dismissed. Within a scenic drive from Palermo, the area around Trapani, Erice, and Marsala is rich in natural beauty, and things to see. The unique light of the salt pans, dotted by windmills, is visible only in Western Sicily where some ruins of one of the oldest civilizations of the Mediterranean, the Phoenicians, bring an evocative atmosphere.

Sicilian Cuisine at its Best

Delight in the sumptuous flavors of Sicilian cuisine, known for its fusion of Arab, and Spanish influences. From the traditional couscous of Favignana island to the fresh produce coming from the slopes of Mt. Etna, menus included in our Western Sicily & Siracusa Tour offer a wide variety of local specialties. Discover new nuances of flavors on a technical olive oil tasting and indulge in the refreshing coffee ice slush served for breakfast in a decade-old pastry shop in Noto. As in all our small group tours, for Western Sicily & Siracusa Tour, we make sure to book a table in celebrated restaurants of the island, alternating fine dining to rustic home cooking hard to find on your own.

The Accommodations on Western Sicily & Siracusa Tour

Stay in restored farmhouses converted to luxury hotels and in centrally-located accommodations in the bustling city center of Palermo. Whether you open the window of your room in the morning or sit and relax sipping coffee, let your senses be inspired by the surrounding olive orchards, and vineyards or by the blue Mediterranean in the distance. We carefully select accommodations that express the soul of Sicily and are much more than a simple place to sleep. The luxury resort boasting a view of the Greek Temples will pamper you with small private pools on your room’s patio and all modern amenities. In Ortigia, timeless elegance in historic palaces carefully restored are the setting of spacious accommodations.

Safety on our Sicily Tour

While certain parts of Southern Italy may be very different from the rest of the country, venturing out by yourself can be more challenging than expected and logistics can be much more complicated, especially driving. Our Sicily tour package takes care of all the details for a hassle-free tour vacation and makes you feel safe. So that we gain access to remote sides of the island and to the back streets of Palermo where our local expert safely shows us the local way of living. With our Sicily tour, you can immerse yourself in the rich history of Noto, Agrigento, Erice, and Palermo, where ancient Greek temples, theaters, and golden mosaics stand as a testament to the island’s past grandeur, without being concerned about driving, dealing with local suppliers, language barrier or any other issue.

A Sicily Tour with Offbeat and Local Interactions

With a group size limited to only 12 guests, our escorted tour to Sicily will introduce you to the warmth and hospitality of Sicilian locals. Whether it’s sharing conversations with friendly pistacchio farmers on the slopes of Mt. Etna or engaging with passionate winemakers during vineyard tours, you’ll have the opportunity to forge meaningful connections where large groups cannot go and gain a deeper understanding of Sicilian life. Discover how history, art and movies can inspire a Sicily or Sardinia Tour in our blog.

Amalfi coast tour

Judy F. – September 2022

“I can’t imagine doing this tour by ourselves. Driving in this part of Italy is truly a nightmare and our driver was so good at it considering that the logistics getting in and out of Positano were complicated to say the least. Every single day was filled with a surprise and the one thing that I will never forget was the view from our room.”

Thank you for this dream vacation

Patrick W. – September 2022

“My wife and I joined a group of friends on the tour of Naples and Amalfi. We were skeptical about going to Naples after hearing many bad stories, however the way Marco took us around made us feel safe at all times and we really enjoyed the atmosphere of the city. Our hotel had an interior courtyard and we couldn’t hear the traffic despite being right in the middle of everything. Positano was a dream come true, from the view of our room to the cooking class with Jacomo, the boat to Capri, the food, it is hard to pick one highlight. We will come back!”

Walk through the ruins of villas decorated with frescoes and mosaics as you learn how Romans used to live before the dramatic event that killed thousands of people.

Today’s lunch is served in a winery located on the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius, whose rich soil full of minerals is key in the production of local traditional wines such as Aglianico, Pedirosso and Lacryma Christi.

Later, drive along the breathtaking Amalfi Coast to the charming village of Positano that has inspired generations of celebrities and artists. From your exclusive sea-view room take in the beauty and admire the maze of steep stairs and alleyways below.

Tonight, dinner is on your own so you can enjoy at your own pace one of the seafood restaurants near the hotel.

Day 4 – Foraging Trekking and Cooking Class near Amalfi

Meals included: breakfast and lunch

Late morning, meet a local gastronomer for an informative foraging trekking through private gardens, lemon orchards and rustic countryside homes reachable only on foot.

We harvest aromatic herbs, fresh basil and some seasonal vegetables before reaching a covered terrace with 180° panoramic views over the Amalfi Coast. Here, we cook some traditional recipes with selected ingredients coming from local food purveyors.

Enjoy your al-fresco lunch surrounded by incredible views that will conquer your senses.

This afternoon we keep driving along the coast spotting private villas, colorful bougainvillea and rock formations, all the way to the town of Amalfi.

Indulge in a tasting of locally-made limoncello and enjoy some shopping time in the narrow streets and piazzas lined up with paper shops, cafes, souvenirs and more.

Dinner is on your own in Amalfi before driving back to Positano.

Day 5 – Let’s splurge on a Private Boat ride to Capri

Meals included: breakfast

Many tourists go to Capri but very few get to do it with a private boat *. Meet your captain in Positano and board our private boat: you can decide if you want to lay on the bow under the sun or if you prefer to sit in the shade of the back. Either way, enjoy the jaw-dropping views of hidden inlets along the Amalfi coastline. Later, we reach the southern coast of the island of Capri with its numerous colorful grottos and evocative rock formations.

We sail to the iconic Faraglioni and you’ll get a chance to swim in a quiet bay, away from crowds. Towels and a refreshing glass of Prosecco are provided!

After docking in Capri, follow your tour manager in the upper town for an introductory walk and spend your free time at your own leisure: maybe a lunch in one of the exclusive restaurants or a hike to the remains of Villa Jovis, once the favorite spot of Roman Emperor Tiberius.

You will be enchanted by the rose gardens spilling over elegant villa walls just steps away from the glamorous fashion shops.

Return to Positano in the late afternoon and enjoy dinner on your own.

*In case of rough sea conditions, for everyone’s safety and well-being, the ride to Capri may be arranged with a public ferry boat (without the chance of swimming and to visit the Faraglioni). In case of bad weather, the Capri excursion will be replaced by another land-based activity. No refunds will be given in either case.

Day 6 – Mozzarella Farm, Greek Temples and Dinner in a Winery

Meals included: breakfast, light lunch and dinner

This morning enjoy a drive to the southern Campania region with its fertile crops and numerous stables of buffalo cows.

Visit a well-established organic farm where every day the world’s famous mozzarella cheese is produced by hand, piece after piece. Sit at the table for a fresh light lunch with a selection of cheese, salad and homemade bread.

This afternoon, meet a friendly local expert in the nearby archeological site of Paestum, where Greek Temples are better preserved than those in Greece! The tour will include a look at the adjacent museum where the iconic “tomb of the diver” is kept.

Relax onboard our small bus as we drive back toward the southern tip of the Amalfi Coast. Meet local host Patrizia who proudly manages her family’s vineyard and lemon grove perched on a slope overlooking the Mediterranean.

Tonight, Patrizia’s mouth-watering dinner is paired with the DOC Amalfi wine, served under a pergola overlooking the coast and the sea.

Return to Positano after dinner.

Day 7 – A day of relax in Positano and Sorrento

Meals included: breakfast and dinner

A vacation in Italy wouldn’t be the same without some time off to take in the beauty of the destination and the chance to relax.

Enjoy the day reading a book on the balcony of your room or walk down to the beach.

Choose among Positano’s linen fashion, art galleries and seaside restaurants, your own way to celebrate the Italian lifestyle.

Later, meet your tour manager and drive to Sorrento for a late-afternoon stroll along Corso Italia and enjoy an aperitivo.

Toast with your new friends in a local restaurant to the end of Naples, Positano and The Amalfi Coast Tour.

Day 8 – Arrivederci to Positano and to your Italy’s Vacation

Meals included: breakfast

After breakfast, a group transfer is arranged to Naples’s airport. Flights should not be booked before 11am. Individual transfers are available on request, for an additional fee.
